A lawyer is the person advises the clients on a legal matter and has the license to engage in legal matters. He is called by many other names like an advocate, counselor, attorney, and barrister. Today lawyers are well equipped with knowledge and support to meet the demand of today’s people. Demand of lawyers is going up and up due to the expansion of businesses, globalization, corporate affairs and growth in population. Thus the opportunities are plenty in this profession.
The job market is diversified. Private practice involves working with a partner in a firm. Lawyers can gain momentum and expertise in selected areas like IP or real estate. Salary can be between 3 lakhs to 5 lakhs rupees per annum. Corporate counsel works in the house and advises their client on the legal matter of corporate affairs including corporate social responsibility. One can earn the salary up to 6 lakhs rupees per annum. Public interest lawyers deal in the interest of public and marginalized people. They can work for the NGOs, social groups or individuals. Salary is around 5 lakh rupees per annum. Government counsels work for the government and public sector undertakings and are paid according to Payscale.
A few exceptional skills are required: oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, calmness, positive attitude, approachable attitude, intelligent and analytical mind, problem-solving skills and leadership skills.
After completing 10+2, one can pursue a three-year degree in LLB from law school. National school of law, Bangalore takes the entrance exam and based on the merit you can get the admission. One year internship is necessary to start individual practice. Master degree can be followed afterward. One can choose on specialization branch among many like civil law, criminal law, corporate or income tax law, international patent law etc.
Merits and Demerits
The profession of lawyer provides a challenging opportunity. One can get respect from the clients and people they are working for. Public counsels get the satisfaction of doing some good to society. Lawyers are respectful and dignified personnel in the eyes of a common man. But sometimes biased thinking and corruption can drown your image and career, leaving you nowhere.
